Beach Safety

  • Open fires are not permitted on the beach.
  • Alcohol is prohibited in public areas.
  • Do not park or drive on the beaches - help preserve the sand dunes.

Water Safety

  • Most beaches mark the swimming condition with color-coded flags:
  • Blue Flag - Safe to Swim
  • Yellow Flag - Use Caution
  • Red Flag - Danger! Strong Undertow, Swimming Prohibited
  • You must be at least 14 years old to operate a jet ski. Always wear a flotation device and drive safely!

Driving the Area

  • Right turns are permitted at red lights when traffic is clear unless marked otherwise.
  • Avoid driving on unpaved shoulders.
  • Driving with an open container of alcohol in the vehicle is prohibited.

FISHING/DIVING/BOATING

A Florida fishing license is required for everyone between 16 and 64 years of age. Persons over 65 must carry a Senior Citizen Hunting and Fishing Certificate wich can be obtained free from the county tax collector. On charter boats you should be covered by the boat's license. In the 1970s, the Panama City Marine Institute began a program of artificial reef-building. These reefs provide breeding grounds for fish and other sea creatures. As a result, the diving and fishing in the area has improved greatly! For beginning divers and snorkelers, the jetties at St. Andrews State Park are safe with shallow waters and no boat traffic.

RECREATION AREAS

  • St. Andrews State Park, 4607 State Park Lane, Panama City, FL 3 miles E of Panama City Beach, off SR 392 (Thomas Drive) 850/233-5140 This 1,260 acre park offers swimming, fishing, camping and a nature trail. Picnic sites are available in several locations on the Gulf beach and Grand Lagoon.
  • Shell Island, This barrier island is located just south of Panama City Beach and is available only by boat! The great stretches of white sand and dunes are just as they appeared to visitors centuries ago.
  • Camp Helen Located on either side of U.S. 98, between Phillips Inlet and the Walton/Bay County Line. Famly recerational area featuring swimming, hiking, picnicking, boating and fishing.
  • Grayton Beach State Recreation Area, (850) 231-4210, Located on State Road 30-A, South of U.S. 98. Its name comes from the neighboring township of Grayton Beach, one of the oldest townships along the Gulf of Mexico in Walton County. This 400-acre park offers rolling sea oat-covered dunes with wide, white sand beaches tapering into the emerald green waters of the Gulf.

These parks are home to a variety of wildlife. Do not pick sea oats (it's against the law) or walk on the sand dunes. Walking on dunes will eventually ruin them; use beachwalks where provided.
